  • Interpretation of the three dimensional human form for flat pattern construction of ladies wear
  • Construction of basic ladies wear block patterns from size charts and applying basic design principles
  • Interpretation of technical drawings into styled patterns evaluation of styled working patterns and engineering for mass production
  • Applying grading principles to basic blocks
  • Analysing and applying grading principles to various styled patterns
  • Demonstrating understanding of size charts and their application

  • Preparation for an entire pattern with all its pieces
  • Compiling of a rule table and entering in computer

  • Digitising of a complete pattern

Garment Construction

At the end of the course the learner will be able to:
  • Use different machine types, identify functions, uses and problems
  • Identify seam, stitch and thread types
  • Identify different attachments, work aids and needle types
  • Identify different types of trimmings and interlinings
  • Operate different machine types and evaluate their performance,
  • Select and prepare fabric for cutting and fusing
  • Complete garments according to customer specifications.

Introduction to Kopperman Computer Aided Design

  • Scanning of designs
  • Using vector drawing tools
  • Develop a print design
  • Creation of Colour ways
  • Story boards

Basic Sewing Mechanics
NQF level 2
12 hrs


  • Understanding of basic sewing machine mechanics and maintenance
  • The identification of individual features of a sewing machine
  • The identification of different types of machines and their uses in the manufacturing process
  • Needle insertion and threading
  • Threading and balancing bobbin thread tension on lockstitch machines
  • Basic settings on lockstitch and chain-stitch machines
  • Checking for: Needle thread and needle breakage, Slipped stitches, seam puckering and slipped stitches, Needle damage
